Relief & Support

Relief Fund

Our Relief Fund is designed with one purpose in mind: To provide immediate resources to veterans in need of medical or material support. The Relief Fund also provides for aid, assistance, and comfort of needy or disabled veterans, their dependent family members, and their widows and orphans. Over the years VFW Post 5760 has leveraged these funds in providing care and assistance to hospitalized veterans, or for those needing rehabilitation, welfare, or social services. Our members have also used these funds to perpetuate the memory of deceased veterans and to comfort their surviving family members.

Contributions from the Relief Fund also provide assistance to three very important programs: The VFW National Home for Children, the VFW Buddy Poppy campaign, and the Seattle VA Hospital Patient Welfare fund.

VFW National Home for Children

An appropriate percentage of Relief Fund monies are provided as annual assistance to the VFW National Home for Children. The VFW established the National Home in 1925 to care for the children and families of our nation’s veterans. Located on 629 acres in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, today’s National Home is a multi-faceted facility created to care for the developmental, social and spiritual needs of its residents. The National Home is not an orphanage, but a neighborhood of custom homes, service buildings and recreational land administered by highly devoted staff. For more on the National Home visit www.vfwnationalhome.org.

VFW Buddy Poppies

An equally appropriate percentage of Relief Fund monies are also provided to pay for our annual supply of VFW Buddy Poppies. The red poppy flower is a symbol of remembrance of comrades lost in battle. It was adopted by the VFW following a nationwide distribution of the flower before Memorial Day in 1922 – the same year the Keewaydin Clubhouse was built on Mercer Island as the community’s first social gathering place. Today, the Buddy Poppy is the official memorial flower of the VFW. As such, VFW holds exclusive patent rights to its name, image, and production. Used as a source of funding for disabled veterans, Buddy Poppy production remains an equal source of pride and physical and emotional rehabilitation for wounded warriors nationwide. All proceeds from public donations for Buddy Poppies are returned to the Relief Fund.

Seattle VA Hospital Patient Welfare Fund

The Seattle VA Hospital Patient Welfare Fund accepts donations as a means to develop and sustain much needed recreational and social activities programs for hospitalized veterans or those needing long-term care. Veterans statewide contribute to this fund throughout the year, making it a priority for VFW Post 5760 contributions in-kind.

This year’s Relief Fund objective is $10,000, towards which you can contribute by sending a personal check made out to "VFW Post 5760" with "Relief Fund" written in the memo block. Mail checks to our address listed, attention "Post Quartermaster." Your generosity is appreciated in advance.

"Blessed are the peacemakers: For they shall be called the children of God.”- Matthew 5:9
